Mercedes Benz V-Class Marco Polo

July 13, 2014

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class van range is set to be launched in Australia in 2015, and ageing hippies – er, grey nomads – could be treated to a luxury-focused campervan experience with the new V-Class Marco Polo.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz V-Class van will replace the Viano and Valente models with a more upmarket look and significantly improved interior, and the Marco Polo version revealed at the 2014 Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf takes the passenger van and makes it road-trip focused.

The campervan is claimed to set “new standards in perceived quality, stylish living and comfortable practicality”, with the interior revisions including a kitchenette with sink and two gas burners, a fold-out table, and storage cupboards. A 40-litre fridge and 40-litre water tank are also fitted.

As with Kombis of old, the rear seats transform into a double bed measuring 2.03 metres long by 1.13m wide – but at the push of a button, rather than by virtue of a heave-ho flip and fold mechanism.

The pop-up roof cavity also houses a second double bed, while further interior modifications include fabric or leather seats, front chairs with swivel function, wooden flooring and a light interior finish to make the van feel more roomy.

Engine options for the Marco Polo in Germany – which goes on sale in late July – include the base model 200 CDI 2.1-litre turbo diesel with 100kW and 330Nm, the mid-range 220 CDI with 120kW and 380Nm, and the range-topping 250 CDI has outputs of 140kW and 440Nm that can push to 150kW/480Nm under hard acceleration.

Mercedes-Benz Australia manager of public relations and product communications Jerry Stamoulis told CarAdvice the local arm has no information on the car at the current time, but that it would be a fantastic fit for the local market.

“I’m sure there’s a lot of interest in it,” Stamoulis said. “It would certainly be something very positive for our market if it were to be made available.”
